Colour Schemes: How Colours Make Us Buy

The episode of the CBC radio program Under the Influence focuses on how colour can influence our decision to buy a product. We will be listening to the broadcast today in class, you will make notes on the following points:

ACTIVITY 1: Note taking

  • Name 2 companies who trademarking a colour.
  • Red it used in what famous logo? Why is it used?
  • Blue is used in what logos? Why is it used?
  • Orange is used in what logos? Why is it used?
  • Green is used in what logos? Why is it used?
  • Purple is used in what logos? Why is it used?
  • Brown is used in what logos? Why is it used?
  • Why are yellow and black used?
  • Why are yellow and red used in the McDonalds logo?
  • The following colours make us feel what? Green, Blue, Peach, Pink, Red
  • Why did Xerox change their logo colour?

ACTIVITY 2: Use Drawing Tool to label Colour Wheel

In your Google document you created yesterday, based on the information from the radio broadcast, insert some descriptive words around your colour wheel, relating to how each specific colour is used. The INSERT - DRAWING and TEXT BOX options will be used.

This week's focus will be on the use of colour in media, advertising and design. To introduce the topic we will be discussing the colour wheel and colour schemes, click link to view the presentation on colour.

A short in-class discussion will focus on RGB colour model and the electronic representation of colour in pixel form, click here for definition.

Activity 1:

Search the Internet for a image of the following, save these images to your hard drive, or copy them from the Powerpoint presentation:

  • an image of a colour wheel, with primary, secondary and tertiary colours labeled
  • an image of a colour wheel with colour schemes labeled
  • an image of a RGB colour model

Create a new Google document, in it include the 3 images above, label each image and make certain each image is set to "wrap text".

Today you will continue with the last day's activity of re-creating your 5 "back to school" themed images.

QUIZ PREP:

Your quiz tomorrow will be a series of 10 images that you need to identify what photographic composition the photographer used when shooting the image. You will need to explain why you choose that specific composition based on the 5 types covered this week. To study for this do a Google image search with following key words:

  • rule of thirds photography
  • horizon placement photography
  • action photography
  • lines of image photography
  • patterns and texture photography

Based on the 5 images you selected yesterday you are going to access these images for the rules of composition the photographer used when shooting the image. The 5 basic rules of photography are:

  • rule of thirds
  • rule for placing the horizon line
  • rule for leaning into the action
  • rule for following the lines of the image
  • rule for pattern and texture
Read the following Nixon link for list of 5 general rules of photography:click here to view link and video

Using the 5 rules of photography, assess the images you selected in yesterday's class for the rules the photographer used to shoot each image.

In your Google document add a line in your table to include what rules were used.

Once you have accessed your images for composition, you can now begin reconstructing the image samples you used from Getty images.

Remember: A photograph is essentially a capture of light, remember not to point your camera into a light source, i.e. a window or directly into a sun spot.

TOPIC: Images, Composition and Meaning

ACTIVITY 1:

Search the Getty images site for 5 images that you think best represent your educational experience, select one image for each of the following categories (please use royalty free images):

  • TIME: Select an image that best describes your ability to re-organizing life to fit into academic life.
  • PLACE: Select an image that represents a place to study that is free from distractions and is comfortable
  • CHANGE: Select an image that represents how you feeling about being back at school and the change in routine?
  • SOCIAL: Select an image that represents how you feel about being part of a classroom and school environment?
  • THINKING: Select an image that represents your mental capacity for learning, is it being challenged are you confident with your abilities?

Right click and save each image to your PICTURE folder on the hard drive. NOTE: These images are royalty free, meaning copy right laws are in effect, these images should not be posted online. They will be used as composition samples.

ACTIVITY 2: Make a new Google Document and create a 2 column table, in the first column INSERT the image you copied from Getty Images, in the other column provide a title of your image and a description of why you choose these images.

You are now ready to start you own blog, you will create a blog address and 1 blog post.

Log into your Google Drive

Select the Google grid, select MORE, select Blogger, select New Blog

ACTIVITY 3: ADD THE FOLLOWING BLOG POST TO YOUR BLOG:

Using a 2 column table format, add to your blog post definitions for the following:

In the digital age, blogging is a form of communicating through telling stories or getting information out to a potentially wide audience of people, with the added ability to comment on a post. On the whole we have a plethora of reasons to create a blog, i.e. personal stories, political stories, reaching out for help, helping others, showing how we live.

Jonathan Harris captures the world’s emotion with his software for those wanting to reach out and share their feelings using a blog. In your Google Document you created yesterday answer the following questions in full sentence format.

  1. Define the term data mining.
  2. Do the bloggers who post the information Jonathan is data mining, know they are being interviewed?
  3. Do you consider Jonathan's use of individual blog posts to be a benefit to the collective?
  4. How do you consider his software programs to be useful to businesses, government or individuals?
  5. Do you consider Jonathan's programming endeavours to be scientific or artistic?

When you create a blog you are essentially creating a mini web page, therefore several basic HTML tags that need to be covered to introduce the blogging topic:

A blog is a web site on which someone writes about personal opinions, activities or experiences.

During the duration of this course you will be blogging about experiences related to your education both from an individual perspective as well as a collective perspective.

Before you start blogging we are going to delve in to the world of bloggers and blogging and consider their reasons and focus for the things they post.

Watch the following Ted Talk relating to Mena Trott who, with her husband founded a software company called Six Apart, and developed blogging software apps called Movable Type and Typepad.

Based on the above Ted Talk answer the following questions, and include your answers in a Google document in your shared folder. All answers should be in full sentences and numbered using the numbered list feature in Google Docs for instructions click here.

What are some examples of collective vs. individual focused blogs?

Why did Mena slowly stop writing her blog?

Would you consider the speaker Mena, to be a narcissistic individual? If so why? Do you think being narcissistic is a criteria for being a good blogger?

Based on the 21st Century Brands CBC broadcast you listened to yesterday, you will be required to create a Google Presentation slide show containing at least 9 pages, each page should summarize the following topics with at least 4 facts per topic(one should be the year it was introduced on the market, where applicable), should also include at least one image per slide:

  • Title Page
  • The Jetsons
  • Smartphones
  • Apps
  • Social Media (You tube, Facebook, Twitter)
  • Netflix
  • E-cigartettes
  • Reality TV
  • Summary Slide

You will also need to know how to do a screen capture on the hardware you are using to create the presentation. On the school desk top computers the [ALT]+[PrtSc].

QUIZ PREP - There is a quiz every Friday in the computer class. Please study the following to prepare for the quiz tomorrow:

  • 3 examples of application software and 3 operating systems
  • know the icons for each of the Google apps we studied this week
  • know the relationship between users, hardware, operating systems and software
